NEW GROUPS FORMING AT MONMOUTH PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATES!!

Monmouth Psychological will be offering two 3-hour blocks of treatment in order to provide Intensive Outpatient Programming for those patients who might benefit from more structured and intensive involvement.  We are encouraging patients to do 3 hour sessions.  However, patients are also invited to participate in separate activities as they coordinate with their therapist & incorporate the activity into their treatment plan.  Patients will be asked to commit to 6 weeks of involvement when they are joining an activity.  Please see the bottom of our Support Groups page for further details.

AVOIDING OVERTRAINING IN HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES AND PERFORMERS

In October of 2004, Monmouth Psychological Associates hosted a day-long conference at Brookdale Community College entitled, "Preserving and Enhancing Performance Potential in Young Athletes and Performers." Dr. Erwin spoke about the psychological hazards (such as eating disorders and "burnout") that young athletes and performers can face when they are pushed too hard. Dr. Andy Bowe, orthopedic surgeon, gave a fascinating talk on preventing and healing over-use injuries. Sport medicine physician, Dr. Steve Rice, spoke about legislative, academic, and cultural initiatives in this area. Liz Ebner and Hilary Turett, registered dieticians, spoke about the importance of good nutrition in coaching and mentoring young athletes towards optimum performance. And, Dr. Walt Andzel, exercise physiologist, and Mr. Mark Lisky, trainer and author, described what sort of training programs preserve performance and enhance potential in the younger athlete or dancer.

With the recent front-page announcement in the New York Times (2/22/05) that the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons will partner with the National Athletic Trainer's Association in an information campaign this Spring about overuse injuries in high school athletes, the information from our October conference can help coaches and performance mentors be ahead of the learning curve in this area.

Three ways to get this information:

Conference Videotape and Workbook, 8 hours of Professional Development for Educators: Rent the videotape, do the workbook and return the quizzes to Monmouth Psychological and get the credits. Suitable for group use in a school. (Videotape viewing is about 4.5 hours and the workbook/quizzes take up the rest of the time.) Please call the office at 732-530-9029 for pricing.

On-Site Workshop: "How to Avoid the Hazards of Over Training in High School Athletes and Performers," with Dr. Erwin and Mr. Lisky, half and full day programs, 4 to 8 hours of credit.  Please call the office at 732-530-9029 for pricing.

On-Site Consultation: Dr. Erwin and his staff are available to consult to schools, colleges, and agencies about the physical and psychological hazards of overtraining and overuse.  Please call the office at 732-530-9029,  and speak with Dr. Erwin directly about your needs.
